Lutherans For Life Update - 2/01/2019 - by Sue Nelson

This is a brief exert from a health teacher, Zach Holsman, at RJE Middle School regarding the fetal models LFL provided him to use after a discussion he and I had at the Children’s Fair in April 2018. Yes, the fetal models are being used and are fantastic. The amount of detail and “life-like” feel to them is outstanding. I and one other health teacher in the building use the models. When I had them out last semester for a unit on the human life cycle, the students did respond very well. It was quiet in the room that day, almost as if there was some ‘pondering about life’ going on. The models were passed around the room during the lesson (two days of lessons of life in the womb) some commented on them as, “so life like”, and “soft just like a baby’s skin”. Others held onto a particular one for the entire class period.

Feedback from the other health teacher I mentioned:

I did use the fetal models during my 8th grade lesson on pregnancy and birth. I was much more amazed at the details then the 8th graders. I did find out that in smaller groups it was more educational, and they discovered more detail by looking and reading through the information. I do plan to use them again and may try to develop some group stations that will allow for small group learning.

Again, so grateful for these to be at our school. Great conversations have begun and will continue on the gift and value of life. And I believe that through these, some adults in our building have also been educated through these models.

Dimes for Missions Sunday

Dimes for Missions Sunday is the second Sunday of every month. Money received is designated to be split between Lutheran Heritage Foundation and Lutheran Island Camp. We receive an average of $500 annually.

Local Missions

The Board of Missions budgets for local missions, needs in our own church or community, and short-term missions, needs other than local. For local missions, we have supported “Mainstreet Living” on KBJR TV Channel 6 out of Duluth. Pastor Ziege has been one of the pastors on the service at 10:00 a.m. We have also contributed in the past to “Hunger No More”, a meal packaging event supported by the Board of Human Care. For short-term missions we are supporting Brooke Thorson’s ministry in El Salvador and in the past a missionary trip to Alaska and Pastor Bernie Lutz’s missionary work in South Sudan. The board also donates $150 annually to ICTV to support tv broadcasts.

Members

Currently our board has only two members. We would welcome anyone who wishes to help in this ministry, even if it is for a short- term project and not a 3-year term commitment. Please talk with Mary Buech or Carla Taylor for more information about our board.
